About us

Local rates of inactivity are above both regional and national levels with 32% of adults and 26% of young people in Wyre being classed as inactive and Wyre Moving More aims to change this.

Wyre Council are working with YMCA Fylde Coast, Lancashire County Council, Active Lancashire, Wyre and Fylde School Sports Partnership, local Primary Care Networks, and Fleetwood Town Community Trust to strengthen the connections between sport, physical activity and health and wellbeing and provide opportunities to get everyone in Wyre moving more.

Wyre Moving More is an ambitious five-year physical activity strategy for Wyre, developed by a cross-sector partnership of experts from health, local government, higher education, schools and the charity sector, which aims to embed a culture of ‘moving more’ and increase physical activity levels across communities in Wyre.

Why Moving More Matters

Rates of physical activity in Wyre are lower than regional and national levels and we are on a mission to change this. Inactivity leads to health inequalities, it affects physical and mental health and can also lead to social isolation.

  • 32.2% of adults are inactive

  • 40% with long-term health condition or disability are inactive

  • 67.3% of adults are overweight or obese

  • 26% of children and young people are inactive

    Why Moving More Matters

Whatever your age or ability, being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life.

Any physical activity is good, no matter what your age or ability, whether that is by attending a structured physical activity class, playing in some team sports, or simply walking the dog or playing with your children at home in the garden.

For most people, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity an important part of everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better and taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier.

Research also shows that moving more can boost self-esteem, improve mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress and anxiety.

    Moving More in Nature

There are proven benefits to being outside in nature and here in Wyre we’re lucky to have a wealth of opportunities to get active outdoors. With miles of award-winning beaches, scenic parks, expansive green spaces, and beautiful, unspoilt countryside, there’s no shortage of ways to connect with nature and socialise in the great outdoors. Plus, moving more in nature doesn’t have to cost you a penny!

Being out and about in the natural world is good for us. Simply having views of trees, plants and the coast can reduce stress, improve self-esteem and mood, increase wellbeing, as well as reducing anxiety disorders and depression. The proven benefits of outdoor activity, both for physical health and mental wellbeing, are on your doorstep.

Visit our activities page to discover all the ways you can move more in Wyre's great outdoors.
